In short: the fastest way to create a Teams meeting link is Calendar → Meet now → Get a link to share in Microsoft Teams. For a meeting at a set time, create it in the Teams or Outlook calendar: the link appears once the meeting is saved. With Teams free, use Meet → Create a meeting link. You can then turn the long link into a short one on MSTeams.link.
A Microsoft Teams meeting link is not something you type: Teams generates it when a meeting exists. So to “create a Teams link”, you create a meeting, instant or scheduled, and copy the link Teams gives you. Here are the five ways to do it, depending on the app you use.
1. Instant link with “Meet now” (Teams desktop and web)
- Open Calendar in Microsoft Teams.
- Select Meet now, then Get a link to share.
- Give the meeting a name if you want, then select Copy link (or share it by email).
Best for a quick call or a link you need right now. You do not have to start the meeting to get the link.
2. Scheduled meeting in the Teams calendar
- In Calendar, select New meeting.
- Add a title, the date and time, and the attendees if you want.
- Select Save (or Send). Teams creates the Join the meeting link.
- Open the meeting in your calendar and copy the link: see how to copy a Teams meeting link.
For a weekly meeting, set it as a recurring series: every occurrence uses the same link.
3. From Outlook (desktop or web)
- Create a New event in the Outlook calendar.
- Turn on the Teams meeting toggle (or select Teams meeting in the ribbon).
- Save or send the invitation: the Teams join block, with its link, is added to the event.
- Open the event again and right-click Join to copy the link.
Tip: the link only appears once the event is saved. More details in how to find and copy a Teams link in Outlook.
4. With Teams free (personal account)
- Open the Meet tab (or Calendar).
- Select Create a meeting link, name the meeting, then Copy link.
Teams free links start with teams.live.com/meet/… and can be shortened like any other Teams link.
5. On your phone (Teams mobile app)
- Open the Calendar tab.
- Tap the Meet now icon to get a link to share, or tap + to schedule a meeting.
- Use Share meeting invite to copy the link or send it from another app.
Need a test or “dummy” Teams meeting link?
Many forms, booking tools and demos ask for a meeting link before the meeting exists. Do not invent one: a made-up teams.microsoft.com address does not open anything, and it can look like phishing. Create a real link with Meet now or Create a meeting link instead: it is free, takes ten seconds and works if someone clicks it.
For a link you will reuse later, schedule a meeting with a date rather than an instant one: Microsoft can expire meeting links that stay unused for a long time.
Make the link short and add a QR code
Whatever the method, Teams gives you a link of more than 180 characters. To share it by SMS, chat or on a slide:
- Paste it on msteams.link and select Shorten.
- Copy the short link (for example
msteams.link/AB12) or download its QR code.
The Chrome extension and the Outlook add-in do it directly in your invitations.
FAQ
Can I create a Teams meeting link without scheduling a meeting?
Yes. Meet now → Get a link to share (or Create a meeting link in Teams free) gives you a link without picking a date.
Can I create a Teams link without a Microsoft account?
No. You need a Teams account (work, school or a free personal Microsoft account) to create a meeting. Guests can join without an account: see join a Teams meeting without an account.
Can I choose the text of my Teams link?
No, Teams generates the address. A short link gives you something readable to share, and it opens the same meeting.
