In short: in Teams, open Calendar → Join with an ID, type the meeting ID and the passcode from the invitation, then select Join meeting. Without the Teams app, go to microsoft.com/microsoft-teams/join-a-meeting in your browser and enter the same two codes.
Every Teams meeting has a link, and most also have a meeting ID (a long number) and a passcode (a short code of letters and numbers). They are handy when the link does not work, when you only have the invitation on paper or on another device, or when someone reads them to you over the phone.
Where to find the meeting ID and passcode
In the invitation, look at the Microsoft Teams block: the ID and passcode are just below the Join the meeting link. The organizer can also find them by opening the meeting in the Teams or Outlook calendar. Some meetings, especially older recurring ones, have no ID: in that case, only the link works.
Join with an ID in the Teams app (desktop or web)
- Open Calendar in Microsoft Teams.
- Select Join with an ID (top right of the calendar).
- Enter the meeting ID and the passcode, then select Join meeting.
Join with an ID without the app
- In your browser, open microsoft.com/microsoft-teams/join-a-meeting.
- Enter the meeting ID and passcode, then choose to continue in the browser.
- Type your name and join: you may wait in the lobby until the organizer lets you in.
No account is needed for this: see join a Teams meeting without an account.
On your phone
In the Teams mobile app, open Calendar, tap the meeting icon at the top right and choose to join with a meeting ID, then enter the ID and passcode.
Meeting ID, passcode or link: which one to share?
Codes are useful as a backup, but they take longer to type and are easy to get wrong. For most guests, a link is faster: one tap and they are in. The problem is that a Teams link is more than 180 characters long. A short link such as msteams.link/AB12 combines the best of both: short enough to read out or type, and it opens the meeting directly. Create one on msteams.link, with a QR code for printed documents.
